Two-Lane Highway

I woke from a dream this morning.
My sheets were soaked with sweat.
I dreamed that I was travelin’
But I didn’t get there yet.

Alone on a road to someplace
I’d forgotten where it was;
The night air chilled my fingers,
But I couldn’t find my gloves.

The moon rode low in the night sky;
Hot flame that lured me on.
It was dark as death in the mirrors
Still miles before the dawn.

My belly growled with hunger.
My eyes grew thick with fuzz.
I wondered if I’d make it
’Had no idea where I was.

CHORUS
Just two lanes on a lone, dark highway.
Just two ways for you to go.
The road ahead is an unknown byway —
The road behind just goes back home.

The gravel grazed my slumber
I think I fell asleep.
Can you dream that you are dreamin’?
I was sinkin’ way too deep.

What web was my mind weaving?
I feared I’d go too far.
Could I wake up if I wanted
Or stay a prisoner in this car?

My eyes locked up ahead now
On two lights way down the road
Morphing slowly from the moon glow -
Getting larger as I rode.

Just two cars on a lonely highway;
One rushin’ to where I’d been.
I wondered who was drivin’
‘N why’d they ever choose that end.

CHORUS
Just two lanes on a lone, dark highway.
Just two ways for you to go.
The road ahead is an unknown byway —
The road behind just goes back home.

The dawn was bound to happen.
New light would start to spread.
Night’s shade was sure to open
My heart still filled with dread.

Up ahead the void was closing;
My throat was coarse like sand.
Knights jousting without lances
Would one be left to stand?

The headlights burned my face now
Next curve, our steeds would pass.
Would the driver turn to see me,
Who’s eyes will pierce this glass?

I saw a solitary traveler
As dawn’s light began to crack.
But as we slowed to face each other.......
It was me I saw lookin’ back.

CHORUS
Just two lanes on a lone, dark highway.
Just two ways for you to go.
The road ahead opens to a new day —
The other way... just ends back home.
